AOA College Counselor, Malik Washington, is winner of Major Brown award

AOA College Access Summer Camp College Counselor, Malik Washington, (left, Wendy Johnson on right) was awarded $50 for excelling in his efforts at the camp.  The donation was in honor of Major Brown, a teacher and coach in the Jersey City Public School system, who passed away in April.  He was an advocate of college students and the award was given on behalf of his love for education.  Congratulations, Malik!!!

AOA College Access Summer Camp at Gholson, Day 13

What a day at camp today!!  Our guest speaker and homegirl, Kathy Miles, came in and talked about her career as a corporate attorney and also enlightened the students about obtaining and maintaining a good credit standing.  Kathy also highlighted her Harvard University experience.  Then, Andrea Kodys, an engineer at ATK, had the students build rockets and LAUNCHED THEM OUTSIDE…IT WAS OFF THE HOOK!!  Thanks to our speakers for making our day at AOA GREAT!

AOA College Access Summer Camp at Gholson, Day 12

No speakers today at camp…the students completed a practice college application, did workbook exercises and reviewed the information necessary for them to know about getting into college.  We got the creative juices flowing later and created some interesting pieces!

AOA College Access Summer Camp at Gholson, Day 11

Day 11 at AOA College Access Summer camp included a presentation from NFL Players Association Attorney Art McAfee, a www.collegeboard.com training session from AOA College Counselor Malik Washington and a discussion on making choices from AOA Volunteer and AOA Parent, Ms. Spencer.

AOA College Access Summer Camp at Gholson, Day 10

AOA campers enjoyed a tour of the University of Maryland in College Park.  After touring the campus, the students went bowling for the afternoon at the Terp Zone in Stamp Student Union.  Our College Camp Counselors (in green shirts) were on hand to answer any campus life questions.

AOA College Access Summer Camp, Day 7

AOA students form a panel to discuss how African Americans are portrayed on BET and the affects it has on our youth.  Malcolm Snorden of the University of Maryland Talent Search discusses college entry tests and how to prepare for them.

AOA College Access Summer Camp, Day 6

Professionals presented at the camp today.  First up was Nicki Washington,  author of “Prepped for Success”.  Then Aaron Waller from the Washington Redskins spoke about his career journey.  We ended the day with US Secret Service Agent Kevin Robinson who gave the students a detailed description of the security clearance process.

AOA students had a great day at NASA Goddard in Greenbelt, MD.  In the morning, the students enjoyed the visitors center.  During the afternoon, the students participated in a presentation on the Sun.
